iPhone 16
iPhone 16, The design of the rear is also clearly different due to the position of the cameras in the camera module: they are now aligned vertically instead of facing each other diagonally.
The screen is protected by a new ceramic protector that Apple says is twice as strong as the glass protector on other smartphones, and is also 50% stronger than its previous protector.
The screen brightness can reach up to 2000 nits for bright outdoor lighting, but in complete darkness the brightness can drop to just one nit.
However, what stands out most about this redesign is the presence of two new buttons . In addition to the power button (right side) and the volume control buttons (left side), we will have two new buttons that debut on these devices.
The first is the action button on the left side that we already had on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro/Max . We can assign all kinds of options to that button, such as launching Siri, recording a voice memo, or identifying songs.
The second, on the right side, is completely new: it’s called Camera Control , which allows you to not only take photos, but also activate a function similar to Google Lens to give you information about what you’re seeing on the screen. This function is based on Apple’s cloud, which “never saves the image.”
The concept, part of Apple’s “Visual Intelligence,” allows for the use of that multimodal AI to use the iPhone camera as a “prompt” to ask questions about what we’re seeing.
The interior of the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is governed by the new Apple A18 , a chip that offers a Neural Engine that is twice as powerful—the focus on Apple Intelligence is clear—and that also benefits from a memory subsystem with 17% more bandwidth, something also useful for processing all AI functions.
This CPU uses a 3nm photolithographic process and has two performance cores and four efficiency cores. It’s 30% more powerful than the one in last year’s iPhone 15, and it’s also more efficient than the A16 Bionic — it can deliver the same performance using 30% less power.
The GPU is also significantly more powerful: it has five high-performance cores and is 40% more powerful than the GPU offered in the iPhone 15. It is also much more efficient: it can offer the same performance as the A16 Bionic using 35% less energy. In other words, we will be able to play our favorite games for longer… or do so more fluidly and with better quality than ever before.
Apple says battery life can last up to 22 hours for video playback on the iPhone 16, and up to 27 hours for the iPhone 16 Plus. Both phones feature fast charging of up to 30W and wireless charging of up to 7.5W with Qi and up to 25W with MagSafe.
The new iPhone 16/Plus will also feature the new iOS 18 that we saw at WWDC 2024 and which is full of surprises and new features. The most important of course is the integration of Apple Intelligence , which finally offers AI functions in these devices and whose features we discuss in a separate article .
A dedicated camera button and more “spatial” cameras than ever
The jump of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus is especially noticeable in the photographic section. We are looking at a promising set that consists of a hybrid main sensor : it combines a 48 MP f/1.6 sensor, with a 12 MP f/1.6 2x telephoto sensor.
In addition to this combined sensor, we have a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle sensor. This sensor also makes possible a particularly promising macro photography mode.
The arrangement of the cameras, as we said, changes to that vertical alignment that allows something important that was not available in last year’s iPhone 15/Plus: capturing spatial videos and photos that, for example, we can enjoy with the Vision Pro.
However, the most striking new feature of this photographic experience is the aforementioned new Camera Control button , which allows you to go one step further when taking a photo.
This button is integrated into the side, not protruding, and is a button covered in sapphire crystal. Pressing it launches the camera, and pressing it again takes a photo. If we want to take a video, we just press and hold it, which allows us to access these functions quickly.
The button also works with the Taptic Engine that is already traditional in other Apple devices: it has a haptic engine that allows us to “feel” the button’s response to the touch and be able to identify it. It is, in essence, like a tiny TrackPad on a MacBook.
The touch sensor can also detect and distinguish a full press from a lighter one . With the latter, we can activate a special preview in which we can adjust the zoom, depth of field and other parameters with a double tap.
This is therefore a great option for photography enthusiasts, who will be able to take advantage of these functions in all kinds of scenarios in a simple way. Its operation seems to be similar to the double-press buttons on DSLR and ultracompact cameras, with which a light press focuses and a full press takes the photo. Here the operation is somewhat different, but certainly interesting.
